All new Elantra ready to create a splash

About a decade ago, Hyundai made its mark in the entry D-segment with the Elantra, the only real competitor to the Skoda Octavia back then. But it faded because of some serious competition, in a segment where it could not compete against the snob value that a Toyota or Honda badge offered.

Another generation of the Elantra came and went without being offered in our market, but come 2012, they are ready to strike the market with the Elantra once again, this being an all-new car. Taking much of its cues from the 'fluidic design' concept, the stretched out headlamps, a more prominent kink on the C-pillar and some smart touches help it look a wee bit different.

The interiors have been spruced up too and like any other Hyundai it's kitted rather well. Dual zone air-conditioning, cruise control, ventilated seats at the front, rear AC vents, rear seat audio controls and a host of other goodies.
It'll be available in a petrol as well as diesel engine option. The diesel is the same that does duty in the Verna, produces 126.2 [email protected] rpm and 26.4kgm of torque. The 1.8 litre petrol produces 147 [email protected],500 rpm and 18.1kgm of torque. Both are offered with either a six-speed manual or an auto.
Hyundai will launch the Elantra in coming weeks and will be assembled at its facilities in Chennai. A price tag of Rs 12-16 lakh should be the kind of range one can expect. Seems like Hyundai has a winner on their hands. Only time will tell.
