2002 hyundai elantra engine was running perfect and then it started to throw this code during a rain storm and then the engine was not firing correctly. I have original plug wires but I am suspecting crankcase postion sensor or circuit because it is almost like the engine is not timing the injectors with the crank position. Should I just replace the sensor and go from there?

That's a possibility, in my generic DTC list it says Ignition/Distributor Engine Speed Input Circuit, which in my mind says "Crank Position Sensor". Best way to know for sure is to scope the CMP and CKP, this will tell you ONE: Your timing belt is ok and in time, and TWO: There are no glitches in the signal. You could always try replacing parts and hope for the best. Just remember, if the surface that the CKP sensor reads is damaged, no new sensor will fix that. And if you're due for a timing belt, I would do that first and foremost
