The trunk light in the Elantra just doesn't seem bright enough for the space that's there. I decided to add an LED light strip as a replacement and make DIY article for those who want better light.

I chose to use a male and female connector in between the festoon bulb adapter and the LED strip just in case I want to add more lights down the road.

Parts you'll need:
Festoon bulb adapter
Male/Female wire connectors
LED Strip
Wire cutters
Soldering gun/Solder
Heat shrink wire wrap

Step 1.

Measure out the length of wire you need and trim the wire from the LED strip to length taking into account the the length of wire youll have from the male/female connectors.

Step 2.

Cut the connector from the festoon adaptor and solder it to the female connector. Remember, before you solder wires together put the heat shrink wrap over each wire.

Step 3.

Solder the male connector to the LED strip. Again, remember to add the heat shrink wrap before soldering. After you're done soldering you can shrink the wrap with a lighter.

Step 4.

Install in vehicle. If the light doesn't turn on at the first attempt just reverse the festoon connector in the light socket.

PrecisionLED.com makes 2 trunk light strip kits. I bought the larger one (30 LEDs) and it installs easy (as shown above, pull the fuse first though). There is an edge on the roof of the trunk (2013 Coupe anyway) to mount the LED strip so it faces towards the bottom of the back seat so it doesn't blind others and keeps the light in the trunk. I highly recommend the upgrade!

Trunk LED strip install

One of the images is where the wire comes from the original bulb location to the LED strip through the trunk frame. You can use any sufficiently long slightly flexible stick to run the wire. I used white floor tape to help cover the wires (our Coupe is white so it's an easy match and hard to see).
