I purchased a 2014 Elentra Se for my daughter.

Naturally in gratitude, she had an accident three weeks later. Not even made a payment yet.

She was doing 25 mph, and got distracted, went up a curb, and took out a brick mailbox, and tapped a tree.

She's was ok, and the car gets towed to the bodyshop.

Damage to passenger side - bumper, fender, hood, plus the steering wheel airbag deployed. Just the damage one would expect, figuring 5-7K to fix.

Adjuster calls me today saying it was TOTALED !!!!!

Now the weird part, as to why.

Adjuster is claiming that if the airbag in this model Elentra deploys, they have to replace the car's ENTIRE wiring harness.

8K to do.

Has anyone heard of this?

I find it unbelievable.

Well it seems it's only the front harness, involving all the engine compartment and dash.

Plus about 8 inches of the sub frame is crushed back, and can't be cut and welded for "safety reasons". So everything needs to be new.

13K to fix a car valued at 18K, so they total it.

Bottom line from what the bodyshop told me is, "New cars are not meant to be fixed beyond dented body panels, and bent suspension. Once the frame is damaged, it's totalled."

800 miles and off to the junk yard.

I'll be out 4 grand on this car, so it was 5 dollars a miles to own it.

Learn from my mistake, make sure you get "gap insurance" when you finance.
