Tail lights/Brake lights intermittently not working

Hi, Iím brand new here!
I have a 2013 Elantra. Recently the brake lights and tail lights have stopped working at times. It seems to be electrical as I am able to fiddle with the wiring and they start working again. Sometimes closing the trunk makes them go out. This is faulty wiring, no?
What I need to know is how to diagnose where the problem is and what parts (harness?) to shop for.
Someone told me to check the fuses.. I donít understand how it could be a fuse issue if the lights work just fine sometimes? If it was a blown fuse the lights would just not work.. maybe Iím wrong.. thatís why Iím here.
I donít know much about lights and wiring and I had a bad experience going to an auto parts store. I know enough to recognize that he was trying to up-sell me.
Thank you so much!
