9 degrees out, car not starting right

Hi all,

So, I got my Elantra last year, and have had no problems with it at all (knock on wood). Well, we just had a blizzard here, and I went out to start my car this morning. At first it wouldnt start at all, just gave me some little sputtery/knock noises. I let it sit a couple minutes, tried a couple more times, I did get it to start, but it was jerky and smelled like gas. I turned it off.

I made sure the snow was cleared all around the car before I started it.

Please tell me I didnt just do some major damage.

Thank you,
V

Oh, it's a 2013

I went out and tried to start the car after it had been sitting in the sun for a while, and it started normally, I let it run for a few mins. About an hour later, I go out there again, and it won't start again...WTF?

A little background would be helpful. New car, used car, what year? Where are you? Was the tailpipe clogged with snow or ice? Otherwise the first place to look is the battery or perhaps a starter solenoid.
