Unhappy Elantra and Sonata weigh down Hyundai's quality scores

The Hyundai Elantra and Sonata were seen as the hallmarks of Hyundai's forward progress in 2011, but just 3 years later the two models may be doing more to hurt Hyundai's reputation rather than help it.

JD Power and Associates recently released its Dependability Study. The study examines three-year-old vehicles for problems per 100 vehicles. Since the 2011 study for 208 model year cars, Hyundai has fallen from 10th overall with 132 problems to 27th in the 2014 survey of 2011 model year vehicles with 169 problems. This year also marks Hyundai's second year in a row of an increase in reported problems. Many of these problems, according to Automotive news, are due to faults with the Sonata and Elantra. One mitigating factor is that reliability fell, on average, throughout the industry for the first time since 1998.

The Sonata and Elantra are vital to Hyundai. In 2013 they were the company's best-selling cars.

Quote:
"We'll be closely going through the data to see where improvements need to be made. Hyundai's goal is nothing short of quality leadership, and the report shows we have work to do," Hyundai spokesperson Jim Trainor said in an email to Autoblog.
Hyundai has gone and hired back engineers that left over quality control issues. That certainly doesn't seem like the right way to fix the quality problems that the company is facing.

Have you found any problems with your Elantra?

Angry problems

we purchased 2 elantras, one limited sedan made in the US and one gls sedan made in korea.
i have had problems with the front end on the limited. it makes alot of noise going over small cracks and bumps in the road, its a big disappointment. it makes the whole car feel cheaper than it really is. i took it to the dealer and they said there is a bulletin on the problem but no fix. the limited also has more road noise, rattles, and the headliner feels very flimsy when you tap on it just behind the sunroof. all around the limited just does not feel as well built as the gls. i hate that i have to bash something made in the usa and i hate that i spent 4k more for this upgrade. the GLS has not had any problems, it feels quieter, more solid, no rattles. its not perfect, but feels a lot better than the LIMITED. i think the biggest improvement these cars need would be a much softer suspension. when you first test drive these cars they feel great but as you spend more time in them you just start to notice the bumpy harsh suspension. i wish manufacturers would focus on building cars with soft quiet suspensions instead of the stiff sport suspensions the car magazines are pushing. we don't drive these cars on race tracks. for long term these harsh suspensions are much harder on the car, will create more rattles, and much harder on your body. on another note every elantra i test drove occasionally has a slight rough idle, you would think hyundia would be able to fix this but no. there is a lot to like about these cars but hyundai needs to address these issues for me to recommend them at their current sticker prices.

The Sunroof does add a little road noise. And they all seem to develop a rattle over time. That's why my 13 GS Coupe doesn't have one. I had Moon Roof option (Factory installed) on a 93 Escort GT, 01 Escape, 08 Malibu.

15k Miles and I haven't been back to the dealer for anything.

My Hyundai 2012 Limited is good. No real issues with it except for having to change tires more often than I'm used to especially this year hitting a couple of potholes. I only have 30K on it and I've changed 4 tires in the 2 1/2 years I've had it, 3 this last month.
