Engine oil level

When I change my oil I add the 5 quarts as per manual capacity specs but it shows overfilled on the dipstick. It also says in the manual to not overfill. How bad is it to leave it as is?

This would depend on how much old oil you let drain out during the change. There is always leftover oil residue and oil caught in little cavities in the engine that equates to approximately 1/2 quart of old oil. Whenever I do an oil change on my car i include an extra spare 2 qts of oil. When I drain the old oil out, I put in 2 fresh quarts of oil and run the car for a couple minutes and then drain again. The 2 quarts of oil I put in washes out that old oil and I drain again....FYI I guess...

Over pressure in your crankcase can lead to leaks. a 1/2 quart over is not going to do anything but like I have seen some customers do in the past they guess how much oil their car takes and they are 2 or 3 qts overfull....no bueno at all....

it was 1 quart over. Way too much for me to just leave in there. I drained it out myself.

Just an FYI to anyone letting someone else change your oil. the 2.0 liter 4 cylinder holds 4.23 quarts in the Elantra. May be different for other models.
