Hyundai’s Most Powerful Elantra Yet is Coming in Late 2016

At the launch of the 2017 Hyundai Elantra, we learned a bit more about the upcoming Elantra Sport model.

Hyundai promises that the upcoming Sport model will be the 'most dynamic model' ever and that it will be the most powerful production Elantra yet. The last generation Elantra Sport used a 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine that made 173 horsepower, so expect the new model to make more power than that.

While Hyundai could use an updated version of the 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine to power the new Sport trim, it wouldn’t be unreasonable to expect the 1.6-liter turbo that’s found in many other Hyundai vehicles to be used. A larger 2.0-liter turbo, found in the Sonata and Santa Fe, could also be used.

The Veloster Turbo, Sonata and Tucson all use the 1.6-liter engine, and pair it to a dual-clutch transmission. The sportiest of those products, the Veloster Turbo, makes 201 hp and 195 lb-ft of torque sent through an optional six-speed manual transmission. A manual option could find its way into the Elantra Sports model as well.

Base 2017 Elantras are powered by an atkinson-cycle 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine that makes 147 horsepower. An Elantra Eco model is also offered that uses a 1.4-liter turbocharged engine that makes 128-hp.

The 2017 Elantra also received a significantly updated rear-suspension, so expect the new Sport to get some further changes to live up to that 'most dynamic' superlative.

Expect the Elantra Sport to debut later this year around at the 2016 SEMA show in Las Vegas.
