Hyundai, Kia Face $775M Lawsuit for False MPG Claims

A second lawsuit is now being brought against Hyundai and Kia for their incorrect mpg claims, seeking $775 million on behalf of 23 plaintiffs.

It was filed in the U.S. Central District Court in Los Angeles, and is seeking compensation for lost resale value on the customers Hyundai and Kia models. The suit claims that the compensation program offered by the two Korean companies does not cover the lost value of the vehicles.

“Plaintiffs and the Class have been damaged by Hyundai’s and Kia’s misrepresentations, concealment, and non-disclosure of the incorrect fuel economy numbers, because they were misled into purchasing Hyundais and Kias of a quality different than they were promised, and paying higher fuel costs they would not otherwise have paid,” the suit says.

The $775 million value was conceived through a formula which accounts for the vehicles worth, and the miles driven over the likely economic life of the car.

Despite the false mpg claims, some experts believe that Hyundai and Kia vehicles’ resale value will be unaffected.

buying back these cars and reselling them might be cheaper in the long run, what if someone was to own one of these cars for 20 years....thats a lot to pay out.

Two consecutive lawsuit is a serious matter anyway.

it is but doesn't seem to be doing any harm...so far.
might take time for the general public to become aware of it.

I happen to read an article awhile ago pertaining to this issue. According to it, Hyundai and Kia were found having made a bold-faced lie about fuel mileage. Suits were filed and numerous people who had bought Hyundai automobiles or Kia automobiles based on gas mileage claims were obviously not amused. A Kia and Hyundai reimbursement program was launched to pay owners for the main difference from the gas mileage they would get based on the claims, which reportedly is going over well. You can also check out this site here to determine how to get a loan for a car that works for you.

My 2013 Hyundai Elantra was advertized at 40 mpg highway. EPA claims 38 mpg. On open highway with little or no breaking at 50-60 mph, I get 31 mpg. And I'm not happy about it! So far, complaints to my Hyundai dealer have gotten me nowhere. I'd be open to suggestions as to what my options are.
