Hyundai Elantra Defect Leads to Lacerations, Recall

Side curtain airbags are no good if they also send a piece of metal in your direction during deployment.

Hyundai is recalling 186,254 model year 2011 through 2013 Elantras because of a support bracket that could become displaced and cause a laceration to vehicle occupants. Last year, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) announced a defect investigation that has since become a recall.

One of the people who filed a complaint with NHTSA said the bracket, “Sliced my ear in half,” and that it “could have been [my] neck.”

Hyundai will fix the problem free of charge by applying adhesive strips to the headliner. According to NHTSA, the remedy is expected to be available in May.

Owners with further questions can contact Hyundai at (800) 633-5151.
